“Have you always had the idea that you’re different than others?
Do you feel a deep connection with nature?
Are you interested in spirituality?
There’s a big chance that you’re a witch!”
‘De weg van de Heks’ (Way of the Witch in English) is a book that I just had to have. Witchcraft and I go hand in hand and make me the person I am today. I first listened to the audiobook version of this book on Story Tell, but after finishing it, I just had to have the book in physical form as well. So, I ordered the book through Lunadea’s website and received a signed copy! Being a witch I love reading about witchcraft. Of course, you just can’t have enough books as a human being, but as a witch you just can’t have enough books about this subject, it is impossible, I tell you! Of course, the best books are the ones that also teach you a thing or two you did not already know and this book did just that!
Spirituality has always been a big part of my life. From when I was a small kid I was able to see entities and could sense all kinds of things, my connection with nature has always been deep, yet I was really doubting myself and my spirituality. I was afraid to say that I felt that I am a witch and bad relationships and certain family members certainly did not approve of it at all. They didn’t let me be me, disapproved of my practices and made fun of it. I’m glad I’ve gotten rid of those people in my life now, because they were seriously bad for my self esteem. I was also bullied quite extremely at school, for being different, despite the other kids knowing nothing about my spirituality and witchcraft. After becoming terribly ill and fighting for my life in 2018 I decided that enough was enough. I promised that I would survive, somehow, and that I would do everything within my power to become the person who I really am. The real me. I still don’t know how I managed to survive the hospital, but after I did, a new path was revealed to me and one of the books that really helped me to walk that path is this book. It gave me all the tools that I had lost along the way, took my insecurities away and gave me back that piece of me that I had been missing for so long. I can finally admit that I’m a witch, I can finally say I’m me. One of the most precious things in life, to have the freedom to be whoever or whatever you want to be!
In this book Lunadea tells about through her personal experiences what witchcraft is, how she experienced this through the years and how she approaches it. How to apply it in every day life, how magically thinking works and how to bring it into practice. She introduces you to all of the festivals and the Wheel of the Year. She also gives information on certain rituals, the different phases of our moon, herbs and many other subjects. There’s even a history section in the book about witchcraft, as you might know, witchcraft has quite a few black pages in history. Lunadea takes you by the hand on the path to becoming a witch yourself. Her writing style is smooth, spontaneous and accesible. That’s why it didn’t take me long to finish this book. It is definitely a good starting point if you want to read about the subject of witchcraft. The book also contains practices and tips you can try to see how it makes you feel and whether or not witchcraft might be something for you. This causes the book to not only be theoratical, but also practical! Once you finish reading, the book is a perfect reference, if you just want to know a specific thing quickly. 🙂
“Witchcraft is living from within your own, natural, spirited core”
In most books about witchcraft you’ll often find rules, trust me, I can know, because I have quite a few books on the subject. “You have to do this”, “You cannot do that”, “This is the only way”, etc. Sometimes this caused me to think if I were reading a bible, or other very strict scripture. I don’t think there’s something wrong with the bible, by the way. Everyone is entitled to his or her own beliefs and lifestyle. It just happens not be mine, haha. If something causes my neck hairs to stand on end it’s strict rules. Witchcraft, to me, is all about freedom and living life as you want, as long as you don’t hurt others in the process. Living with nature and the season’s changes and the different moon cycles. Whenever any book brought up any rules, I would often quit reading, or stopped taking it seriously. All these forced things that were brought up in those books didn’t feel right and trustworthy and if there’s something witchcraft is all about it’s trust in nature and oneself. Modern witchcraft, like Wicca is not for me, personally. I’m a traditional green witch and stand firmly on the ground with both my feet. The important thing is that you should feel good about what you’re doing and how you’re living, without being forced to live a certain way, because that should never be the case.
And that’s something Lunadea illustrates amazingly well in this book. There is no “you must”, she doesn’t tell you what to do, but rather gives advice and tips and leaves it up to you to apply these in your life, if you wish to do so. She explains witchcraft in a straightforward manner, using her experience of over twenty years of being a witch. Her motto: “Do no harm, but take no shit.” If witchcraft is going to have just one rule, that should be it, if you ask me. Lunadea gave me the feeling of “coming home” while reading her book. Everything fell in place and I felt the witch in me finally awaken again. I was finally able to flourish and that feeling felt so familiar and trusted. For the first time in ages I didn’t feel like I was alone anymore. I wasn’t held back anymore and I recognized so much from Lunadea’s story in my own life. I know it’s not common for people to admit that they’re a witch, and there are many factors that come into play here, but all my life I’ve known I’m different from most others. I love calm and quiet, walks through nature, that’s how I truly relax and find piece of mind. I’m not a very outgoing type, but rather a homebody and spirituality has been a passion of mine from when I was a young girl. Of course, this is still the case and all I needed was this ‘Wake up call’ to allow myself to be myself again, a traditional, green witch. #proudofmyself I’m so grateful for Lunadea for writing this book, I would just love to give her a big hug for creating this lovely book. 🙂
“During the year the temperature changes, because the Sun is at a different distance from the Earth. This influences the weather, which influences nature and so, everything is connected.”
